Training for a big ride or race can be daunting. By starting your training schedule well in advance of the event you can break training down into small more manageable pieces.
Here are some simple steps to training for the 2008 Felt Tour de Park City.
Set Season Goals
Setting simple cycling goals is a great way to start the season. A few examples may be to establish a pre season weight training program, ride 30 mile rides 4 days a week, eat a more cycling friendly diet, and ride in four events prior to the Felt Tour de Park City.
A great pre training ride for the Felt Tour de Park City is the High Uintah Classic.
A Simple Approach to Training
Preparation (3-4 weeks)
General cycling related exercises with free weights, cross training, and on-bike drills. Strengthen your core muscles to increase balance and overall body stability. Remember all muscles and body movement is related to the core.
Establish a Base (8-12 weeks)
Establish strength, endurance and speed, introduce muscular endurance, and hill work. Slowly increase miles and time in the saddle.
Build (6-10 weeks)
Develop muscular and endurance, speed endurance, and power. Continue to put in the miles and saddle time. At this point an easy 50 mile ride should feel pretty good.
Peak (1-2 weeks)
Consolidate race or ride readiness with reduced volume and race tune ups. Be sure to get adequate rest. Morning resting heart rate checks (before you get out of bed) can tell you if your body needs rest. If your heart is 3-4 beats per minute higher than your average resting heart rate is your body telling you to rest.
Race or Ride
Ride in a few centuries or road races. Events and races challenge your mind and body continually preparing you mentally and physically for longer and harder rides or races. For those racing in the Felt Tour de Park City continue to build miles from 100 to 125 to 150 to 175.
The Felt Tour de Park City
Now you are ready to ride or race in the Felt Tour de Park City, Enjoy!
The Felt Tour de Park City offers a fantastic long distance race option for those training for LOTOJA in September or as a race option for those who are unable to register for or get into LOTOJA. The August 2 date of the Tour de Park City and its course distance allow you to challenge your legs on a 170 mile race while still leaving plenty of recovery time to race in LOTOJA.
